Ron Thompson

Head Swim Coach

I started swimming in April 2006 at age 15, and swam all through high school with Russ as my coach. I started coaching for Oakdale in 2010 and coached the 11-14 year round age group until 2020. I now coach the Senior Silver group. In my “free time” I attend CSU Stanislaus where I am working on my BA in Mathematics and a minor Economics with plans to be a math teacher.

I am not a very talkative person by nature, especially during practices. The exception to this would be when I am in a lecture mode. I am readily available via text to answer any questions. I also have a Remind group set up. To join the Remind group text @gold11o to 81010 I also keep my practice plans online in a google sheet that can be accessed at any time. Note that currently the practice plans are just guidelines to what is actually going in practice.

A slight insight into my coaching philosophy. I do not believe in pushing swimmers in the sense of yelling at them or giving them “hard” and “difficult” swim sets. I believe swimmers must choose to work, listen, and improve on their own accord. I view the pool deck and practices as my classroom and swim meets as test/quizzes on the material being practiced. This is their sport not mine, they have to take ownership of it. To paraphrase on of my favorite movies, “I can only show them the door, they have to be the ones to walk through it.” I try to help guide swimmers by helping them set and work towards goals.
